New to International Stem Cell Corporation
Welcome to Dr. Frank Cloutier
ISCO welcomes Dr. Frank Cloutier to its research team. Dr.
Cloutier just completed his post-graduate
work
with Dr. Hans Keirstead at UCI.
He will continue to work at the UCI laboratory to transfer stem cell culture
technology to the Oceanside, CA laboratory in anticipation of collaborative work
with
Dr. Keirstead and
the Reeve Irvine Research Center at UCI. Dr. Cloutier is
part of the Lifeline team
working on the clinical use
of stem cells for
treatment of retinal disease.
Welcome to Dr. Bernard M. Wagner, MD,
the latest
member of Lifeline’s Scientific Advisory Board
Dr. Wagner will be a valuable
addition to Lifeline’s SAB, especially in Lifeline’s interactions with the FDA
for the manufacture and testing of cells for future therapeutic use. Bernard M.
Wagner, MD is an
Emeritus Research Professor of Pathology, New York University
Medical Center and Emeritus Clinical
Professor of Pathology, College of
Physicians & Surgeons, Columbia University, New York.
He is a
Diplomat, of the
American Board of Pathology and Diplomat (Hon.), of the American College of
Veterinary Pathologists. Dr. Wagner is also a Fellow of the Royal College of
Pathologists (London);
Fellow, Academy of Toxicologic Sciences; Fellow, New York
Academy of Medicine; Member, Committee
on Toxicology, National Academy of
Sciences; Qualified Expert, European Council, Safety Assessment;
Member
Executive Committee, Board of Directors, American Registry of Pathology, Armed
Forces
Institute
of Pathology; Member, GRAS Expert Panel (FDA); and Fellow of
American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Currently, he is a Senior Consultant for
Roche and Consultant for ICOS Corp.
Manufacturing
Our
manufacturing capacities are
improving and expanding. Last week we produced our 59th consecutive
“lot” of product. The latest lot consisted of 800 units and utilized a new “bag
process” that minimized exposure of product to the outside environment. All
lots manufactured in our new clean room have been sterile to date. This
accomplishment is a necessary step towards establishing technologies at Lifeline
for the eventual cGMP production clinical products.
Progress to Date
Although a young
company, ISCO has built a
portfolio of success.
-
Secured exclusive worldwide
therapeutic rights to use leading technologies to create embryonic stem
cells and to derive cells suitable for the treatment of diabetes, liver and
retinal disease.
-
Employs a team of
world-recognized scientific staff in human cell culture. ISCO's
scientific team has training and experience in the unique protocols and
techniques needed to:
-
Employ techniques to
create stem cells that have the potential to avoid immune rejection
using parthenogenesis and somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT),
-
Create animal-free cell
culture media for the culture of cells without contamination.
-
Create human retinal
cells from stem cells for use in early stage clinical trials
-
Manufacture cells and
culture medium under cGMP conditions suitable for FDA approval.
-
Assembled a management team
with proven track records in developing, manufacturing, marketing and
selling human cells for research and therapeutic use.
-
Set up a Scientific
Advisory Board staffed with experts with broad knowledge in the fields
necessary to create and test cells for therapeutic use, including the fields
of human embryonic stem cell culture, molecular biology and regulatory
compliance.
-
Developed and launched
the
Lifeline brand of research products for the culture of human cells – including FibroLife™
products for the culture of human stem cells.
-
Built-out and equipped a
manufacturing and development laboratory in Maryland staffed to develop
research products focused on human cell culture.
-
Opened a facility in Oceanside California to consolidate R&D and build out a prototype facility for the production of therapeutic cells derived from stem cells for early-stage clinical trials.
Research Donation Opportunities
•
ISCO has made
arrangements that will permit tax deductible donations to be made to accelerate
its therapeutic research into stem-cell-based retinal degenerative disease
research.
•
All funds are
managed by the
Reeve-Irvine Research Center Keirstead Lab Retinal Project, through the
not-for-profit “University of California at Irvine Foundation (UCI Foundation).
